How to stay visible in a search landscape shaped by AI?

Imagine someone searching for an online agency in Amsterdam. Google instantly shows an AI-generated shortlist. Naturally, we want our agency to be included. For that to happen, search engines and AI need to clearly understand who we are, what we do and when we are relevant. In this blog, we explain how we make that happen.

SEO, AEO and GEO- how to stay visible in a search landscape shaped by AI

Being visible is no longer just about ranking high in Google. It is also about becoming the answer people see and the brand AI tools recommend. That is where SEO, AEO and GEO come together. In this blog, we explain what they mean, why they matter and how Hide and Seek can help your brand stay visible as search continues to change.

Three different ways to be visible

SEO helps people find you

SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is still the starting point. It helps your website appear in the organic search results when people look for something relevant to your business. For Hide and Seek, that could mean appearing for a search such as “online marketing agency Amsterdam” or “festival marketing agency Netherlands”. The goal is straightforward: visibility that leads to a click, a website visit and eventually a conversation. Strong SEO is built on a solid website, useful content and authority within your field.

AEO helps you become the answer

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization. This is about making your content clear enough for a search engine to lift the answer directly from your page. For example, someone might ask: “What should I look for in an online marketing agency?” If Google uses a paragraph from a Hide and Seek article to answer that question at the top of the page, we are visible before the user has clicked anything. That could happen through a featured snippet, a People Also Ask result, voice search or an AI-powered answer box. With AEO, the ambition is not just to appear in the results. It is to provide the result.

GEO helps AI understand and mention you

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. It focuses on how generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity interpret your brand and use your information. Suppose someone asks: “Which online marketing agency in Amsterdam has strong experience in festivals and cultural brands?” You want Hide and Seek to be part of that answer. That does not happen because you bought the top position. It happens because your website, case studies, services, external mentions and overall digital footprint consistently communicate what you are known for. In other words, AI needs enough context to connect your brand to the right question.

A useful way to remember it: SEO gets you ranked. AEO gets you selected as the answer. GEO gets you included in the conversation.

They are not separate strategies

SEO, AEO and GEO are often presented as three new disciplines. In practice, they are layers of the same visibility strategy. SEO comes first. If your website is difficult to crawl, your content is weak or your authority is limited, there is very little for search engines or AI systems to work with. AEO builds on that foundation. It makes your content easier to interpret, extract and present. GEO adds the wider brand context. It asks whether your business is consistently associated with the right topics across your website and the rest of the web.

That is why GEO is not something you can solve with one page or one technical update. AI tools form an impression based on a broader mix of sources, including articles, reviews, videos, industry platforms and other websites.

What is actually changing?

The click is no longer the only sign of visibility

Search used to follow a familiar pattern: a user entered a query, scanned the results and clicked a link. That journey is becoming less predictable. People can now get a useful answer from a search summary or an AI tool without ever visiting the original source. That may reduce clicks, but it does not necessarily reduce influence. If your brand is named as an expert, source or recommended provider, that still creates recognition and trust. Visibility can now happen before the website visit, and sometimes without one.

Clear positioning matters more than clever language

Search engines and AI tools need to understand exactly what your company does. A website full of phrases like “driving impact”, “unlocking growth” and “creating meaningful results” may sound polished, but it often says very little. Specificity is far more useful. For Hide and Seek, that means clearly communicating our expertise in online advertising, search, social, data, tracking, festivals and cultural brands. The easier your business is to describe, the easier it is for AI to place you in the right context.

Your website is only part of the picture

Your own website remains essential, but it is no longer the only source shaping your visibility. AI systems also pick up signals from reviews, interviews, case studies, YouTube content, media coverage, industry websites and online discussions. A strong brand is therefore not only well explained on its own website. It is also recognised in the same way elsewhere.

Measurement needs to evolve

Rankings, clicks and organic traffic still matter. They are just no longer the full story. Brands will increasingly need to look at questions such as:

  • Are we mentioned in AI-generated answers?
  • Are our pages being cited as sources?
  • Is branded search increasing?
  • Are visitors arriving through AI platforms?
  • Which topics does AI associate with our brand?

Search performance is becoming less about one position and more about overall presence.

Want to strengthen your visibility across search and AI?

Understanding the shift is one thing. Turning it into a clear, practical strategy is the next step. We help you identify where your visibility can be improved, which content and signals are missing, and where the biggest opportunities lie across SEO, AEO and GEO.

Curious what that could look like for your organisation? Get in touch, and let’s build a clear path towards stronger visibility.

Hivos x Hide and Seek: a Loving Project with real impact

For Hivos, we worked on a Loving Project focused on gathering signatures in support of LGBTQI rights. What started with a special phone call grew into a campaign that generated more than 1,000 signatures, valuable insights into lead quality, and a collaboration that felt loving in every sense of the word.

How this collaboration started

At Hide and Seek, we do not call ourselves The Loving Agency for nothing. We do not just want to create great work, but also make a positive contribution to the world around us. That is why, from the very beginning, we have consistently dedicated time to charities and social impact organisations.

This collaboration started with a phone call. Sabine, co-founder of Hide and Seek, was contacted by Hivos with a request for a donation. During that conversation, another idea came up: rather than contributing financially, we would love to support in a way that was closely aligned with what we as an agency have to offer. That is how Hivos became a beautiful Loving Project.

That immediately felt right. Not only because of the important work Hivos does, but also because it connects closely to one of our own values: Different. To us, that means everyone should be free to be who they are. That is exactly why it felt so meaningful to contribute our time, knowledge and energy to this project.

The focus of the campaign

Together, through audits and analyses, we mapped out opportunities across paid social, Google, SEO and tracking. For the signature campaign, the main focus ultimately became Meta Ads, with the goal of generating as many high-quality signatures in support of LGBTQI rights as possible.

Our objective was clear: to drive as many quality signatures as possible that could be followed up via email. In this case, each lead was equal to one signature. The campaign resulted in over 1,000 signatures, well above the original target.

What we learned about lead quality

Just as valuable as the volume were the insights the campaign delivered. During the campaign, we tested different routes to a signature: through lead forms and through the website. In practice, the website route proved to be the most valuable. These signatures could be linked directly to the CRM, after which Hivos could take over the follow-up with potential donors through an email flow.

Visitors were given multiple opportunities to donate throughout the journey: in the form itself, on the thank-you page and in the follow-up email. Offering these different moments had a positive effect on the number of conversions.

That is what made this project especially strong: not just high engagement, but also clear insights into the relationship between lead quality, follow-up and eventual impact.

Why this was a true Loving Project for us

To us, this is exactly what a Loving Project should be: creating something meaningful together, learning together, and leaving an organisation with something they can genuinely build on. With Hivos, that felt even more special, because what they do and what they stand for is incredibly important in today’s world.

A big thank you to the Hivos team for their trust, the wonderful collaboration, and all the thoughtful gifts afterwards. The handwritten card, the scarves, the chocolate, and of course the beautiful Hivos doormat were the perfect finishing touch. We walked away with big smiles on our faces. That is what it is all about.

And if you also strongly believe that everyone should have the right to be themselves, please add your voice in support of Hivos via this link.

Inside the Future of Festivals: Learnings from Berlin

Last week, I took a trip to Berlin. My destination: Future of Festivals. It is a conference and trade fair for the live events industry. Festival organisers, suppliers, creatives, and experts come together to explore what lies ahead.

Being in the heart of the industry was a great reminder of why we do what we do. And why we’ll be back next year. Curious how online advertising can grow your festival? Feel free to reach out!

Future of Festivals Blog Hide an Seek

The Future of Festival is a space full of innovation in production, sustainability, marketing, and technology. And just as importantly, a place to connect, network, and meet both new and familiar faces. A hub where ideas for the festivals of tomorrow are shaped not only on stage, but in conversations across the entire venue.

Exploring the Future of Festivals

For us, as an online marketing agency deeply rooted in the festival world, it’s essential to stay close to the industry we love. Many of our clients operate in live events. Staying ahead of developments helps us bring forward-thinking ideas to the table, ensuring the right messaging reaches the right people. This approach ultimately elevates the festival experience and supports our partners in selling out. So off we went… exploring the future of festivals.

There were many insightful sessions and panels, far more than I can list here. I joined everything from discussions on international promotion to talks on generational expectations and festival tourism. Other sessions covered sustainability, safety, and shifting audience behaviours. Some sessions were in German as well, which meant I really had to sharpen my ears to catch the essence. It made the experience even more fun and immersive.

On the fair floor, countless booths showcased fun and forward-thinking innovations. There was also a designated area for Dutch impact makers, filled with ideas that genuinely have the potential to make a difference. Along the way, I kept running into familiar faces. From ticketing partners and payment systems to ridesharing platforms, living labs, and of course many different festivals. Even though I travelled alone, I instantly felt welcomed and quickly became part of a fun bigger group. A big thank you to everyone who made that happen.

Adapting to Expectations of Festival Audiences

Reflecting on my main takeaways, a broader theme stood out: festivals must remain deeply attuned to the shifting wishes and expectations of their audiences. Beyond strong, trend-driven line-ups, visitors increasingly look for additional programming, comfort, atmosphere, and curated experiences. In one of the sessions, a professor introduced the five E’s a festival should keep in mind: Esthetics, Education, Entertainment, Escapism, and Economic Value. A simple but powerful reminder that a festival is way more than just a line-up.

Zooming in on marketing, our core domain, several topics resurfaced across sessions.

  • The channel mix is expanding, with festivals relying heavily on Meta and TikTok, both organically and paid.
  • Video-first was clearly the standard across nearly all case examples. With that shift, long-form content is also making a comeback, and the aftermovie is rising in importance again.
  • Content must be diverse, showing a complete and inclusive picture of the crowd and all the experiences on offer.
  • Tailored messaging for different audience segments is becoming non-negotiable.
  • Reaching younger audiences remains a challenge. Creators and micro-influencers were mentioned as one of the tools festivals experiment with. But clearly, they’re just part of a much bigger strategic picture.

It was clear that a strong marketing strategy is essential. Focused, creative, and perfectly aligned with the festival and its’ audiences. That’s what drives success.

Online Marketing for Live Events

So, here and there, online marketing was mentioned. Those moments caught my attention right away, since this is what we work on every day. We continuously see shifts that could strongly impact festival success. From creating the right content for each platform to using audience insights and proper measurement to optimise every step. We know firsthand how much the right online advertising strategy can influence the success of a festival.

Looking ahead, we truly see online advertising as part of the future of festivals. It helps reach the right audiences, build excitement, and sell more tickets. We would love to help shape the conversation next year; by showing how online advertising can strengthen festival growth. Hopefully, someone from our team can take the stage and bring this topic the attention it deserves.

See you!

Overall, Future of Festivals was inspiring, energising, and absolutely worth the trip. Being surrounded by the industry we care so much about reminded me once again why we do what we do, and why we can’t wait to return next year.

Want to explore how online advertising can elevate your festival long before the next Future of Festivals? We’d love to think along with you and build a strategy that moves audiences… and tickets! Just reach out to us!

Social Media use in The Netherlands in 2024

By Sabine, 10 January 2024

Social media has been central in the media landscape for many years, with numerous global companies competing to be the most important platform for organizations, governments, NGOs, and consumers. In 2023, Facebook and Twitter lost many users, while TikTok, Instagram, and WhatsApp saw an increase in user numbers. This is evident from the National Social Media Survey 2023, the largest study on the use of social media in the Netherlands, conducted by Newcom. Read here what this means for the trends to follow in 2024.

The biggest losers and winners

Those who follow the news a bit see X (formerly Twitter) regularly in the news. More and more critical notes are also reflected in the number of users, with X losing almost half a million users in the Netherlands in 2023. Facebook also lost users.

The growth/decline of the 5 largest social media platforms in 2023

The growth/decline of the 5 largest social media platforms in 2023

Whatsapp, Instagram, and TikTok, on the other hand, show the largest growth in user numbers. Instagram gained 1,178,000 more users in 2023 compared to 2022. TikTok is not yet among the 5 largest social media platforms in the Netherlands. If the current trend continues, this will not last long. In addition to Instagram, TikTok also gained more than 1 million new users in 2023. That’s even a 34% growth.

Daily use of social media platforms

Just like the total number of users, the daily use of Facebook also decreased by 4%. In daily use, WhatsApp is well ahead and has experienced strong growth. The platform shot up by 1,141,000 daily Dutch users. The strongest riser, in percentage, is again TikTok. The platform has increased by 54% in daily use, which is an increase of 862,000 users.

Daily users of the biggest social media platforms in The Netherlands - 2024

Besides the decline of Facebook, the decline of X / Twitter (-26%), LinkedIn (-13%), and Pinterest (-15%) is also noticeable. A new notable platform is BeReal, which, with 0.8 million daily users, is in 9th place. This platform was not included in the study in 2022, so there is no comparison material.

  1. A positive or negative NPS often correlates with declines or increases in users.
  2. Facebook is seeing aging. The largest losses in users are between the ages of 15 and 29. The age group 55 and older, on the other hand, sees a growth of 4%.
  3. X / Twitter mainly loses highly educated women aged 20 to 39.
  4. Instagram is less popular among teenagers; the momentum there is with TikTok, Snapchat, and BeReal.
  5. The daily use of Whatsapp is declining under the age of 25, with growth in the age groups above.
  6. TikTok is growing strongly among those over 40, but also among twentysomethings and young thirtysomethings; the platform is increasing in user numbers.
  7. Among teenagers and early twentysomethings, BeReal has a serious market share.
  8. The number of social media platforms used daily has increased, mainly thanks to the age groups from 40 years.
  9. All age groups are more active on social media daily in terms of minutes.

Take advantage of this research, show your manager that it’s finally time to start advertising on social media, and investigate which platforms your target audience mainly uses. If you want to read the full study, you can visit Newcom.

The Future of SEO: From AI to Voice Search

By Sabine, 15 September 2023

The online world is changing fast, and so is the way we make our websites show up in search results. Gone are the days when just using the right keywords was enough. Now, with new technologies, how we do SEO is changing too. In this blog you will learn about our predictions for the near future and what technologies will lead the way in Search Engine Optimization.

Artificial Intelligence: The backbone of modern SEO

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is more than just a trendy word now; it’s becoming a major part of online searching. For example, Google uses AI to improve its search results. AI helps predict what users might search for even before they finish typing. It also means search results will become more personalized, matching what people like, their past searches, and even how they’re feeling.

Voice Search: The dawn of conversational queries

Devices like Amazon Echo, Google Home and just our smartphone let people search using their voice. This means people use natural, spoken phrases instead of typical keywords. A conversational query would be a full sentence of a user asking a device a question, optimizing for voice search is getting more and more traction.

E-A-T Guidelines: The gold standard of content quality

Google has guidelines that focus on Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness (E-A-T). Soon, tools might measure how trustworthy a piece of content is, looking at things like the writer’s background, where links come from, and if the information is correct. What people say about a business offline could also affect online rankings.

Augmented Reality: Merging the digital and tangible

The line between the digital world and reality is blurring with Augmented Reality (AR). Not only can you point your phone at a restaurant for reviews, but soon, you might get virtual tours, book a table, or even sample a product virtually. Businesses that adopt AR early will likely have an advantage, offering users an immersive experience that’s hard to rival. The early adopters will take the advantage until the technology is perfected.

Zero-Click Searches: Instant answers

The SEO landscape is witnessing the ascent of zero-click searches, courtesy of features like Google’s Knowledge Panel. Traditional top positions in search results may no longer be the coveted spots, as SEO experts pivot to optimizing for featured snippets that offer instant answers. For businesses, this means there’s a new prime spot: becoming the definitive answer that search engines display prominently.

Blockchain: Beyond cryptocurrencies

While most people associate blockchain with cryptocurrencies, its potential for SEO is immense. The transparency and security that blockchain provides can ensure a cleaner, more trustful digital space. By verifying the authenticity of ads, transactions, and even content, blockchain can create a safer environment for users and businesses alike. Plus, with its capacity to provide verifiable timestamps, creators can firmly establish their original content, minimizing unauthorized reproductions.

In essence, the horizon of SEO stretches far and wide, promising an exhilarating blend of technology, user experience, and pure content quality. It’s not merely about ranking anymore; it’s about ensuring relevance and authenticity in a digital universe that’s always in flux.

How to handle SEO updates?

By Sabine, 7 September 2023

In the ever-evolving world of Search Engine Optimization (SEO), staying on top of algorithm updates is crucial for maintaining and improving your website’s rankings. Search engines like Google regularly tweak their algorithms to deliver more relevant and useful results to users. These updates can have a significant impact on your SEO efforts, making it essential for businesses and website owners to adapt and respond accordingly. In this article, we’ll discuss where to find algorithm updates, how often they occur, and provide valuable insights on how to respond effectively to these changes.

For a holistic understanding of algorithm updates, it’s crucial to ground ourselves in the basics. If you haven’t already, I highly recommend revisiting our previous articles: The pillars of SEO provides an in-depth look at the foundational elements, How search engines work offers insights into the mechanics of search engines, and How SEO works breaks down the intricacies of optimizing your online presence. Together, these resources will equip you with the knowledge to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of SEO.

Where to find algorithm updates

Finding out about algorithm updates is essential for anyone vested in SEO. The primary and most trustworthy source to get this information is directly from the search engines themselves. For instance, Google often disseminates updates through their Webmaster Central Blog and their official channels, like their Twitter account, now X, (@searchliaison). By staying updated with these channels, you’re ensured of obtaining the latest details on impending shifts.

Furthermore, if you’re overseeing a website, the Google Search Console should be a staple in your toolkit. This indispensable tool not only furnishes invaluable data concerning your website’s performance but also flags potential hitches stemming from algorithm alterations. A case in point is the recent information it provided on the Core Web Vital update, inclusive of INP metrics.

Beyond these direct sources, the SEO community is rich with news websites, blogs, and forums that offer timely updates. Renowned platforms such as Moz, Search Engine Land, Search Engine Journal, and the SEMrush Blog consistently delve into algorithm changes, giving a deeper understanding of their probable repercussions on SEO tactics.

So, how often do these algorithm updates take place? While the frequency can be inconsistent, it’s a given that these changes are recurrent. To put it in perspective, Google introduces thousands of these adjustments annually. Although a vast majority are subtle and might escape your notice, there are significant updates like Panda, Penguin, and the Core Updates that dramatically reshape search results. It’s noteworthy that Google typically rolls out several core updates every year, leading to discernible shifts in search rankings. Nonetheless, it’s pivotal to recognize that not every algorithm alteration is publicized. Some might just be subtle tweaks aiming to refine the search quality.

How to respond to algorithm updates in your SEO

Start by staying informed. Regularly check official sources and industry news so you are consistently up-to-date on any modifications that could impact your website’s rankings. While keeping abreast of these changes, use tools like Google Analytics, Google Search Console, and other third-party SEO software to keep an eye on your site’s performance. If you’re well-versed in SEO, you’ll be able to distinguish between performance changes due to algorithm updates and those caused by other factors like seasonality or competitors.

In the event of a noticeable drop in your rankings or traffic post an update, it’s essential not to react impulsively. Take the time to meticulously assess your website’s content, backlinks, and overarching SEO strategy. Identify potential areas where you might have veered off from SEO best practices and begin implementing necessary improvements.

Remember, the foundation of SEO success is high-quality, pertinent content. Many algorithm updates lean towards prioritizing content that delivers genuine value to its users. Hence, it’s beneficial to regularly review and refine your content to ensure it remains engaging, informative, and current.

In terms of your off-page strategy, pay close attention to your website’s link profile. Disavow any low-quality or spammy links that could be detrimental to your rankings. Instead, prioritize the cultivation of high-quality, organic links through honest outreach endeavors. With Google’s emphasis on mobile-first indexing, the mobile-friendliness of your website is indispensable. Confirm that your site is fully responsive and thoroughly optimized for various mobile devices to safeguard or enhance your ranking position.

Lastly, never underestimate the power of a gratifying user experience in SEO. Work on optimizing elements like your website’s loading speed, navigational structure, and overall user-friendliness. Doing so not only boosts user satisfaction but can also play a pivotal role in improving your search rankings.

The Three Pillars of SEO: A breakdown

By Sabine, 18 August 2023

Search engine optimization (SEO) has become an indispensable part of online marketing for businesses and individuals alike. To truly grasp its significance, it’s essential to understand how search engines work and the basics of SEO. Once you’re familiar with these fundamental concepts, you can delve deeper into the three main pillars of SEO: technical SEO, on-page SEO, and off-page SEO.

Pillar one: Technical SEO

Technical SEO refers to the underlying structure and setup of your website. It ensures that search engines can easily crawl, interpret, and index your site’s content. Unlike on-page and off-page SEO, which focus on content and backlinks respectively, technical SEO addresses the backend of your website.

Website Speed

When we speak of Website Speed, we’re addressing the integral role that the pace of a webpage plays in user experience. A sluggish site can frustrate users, often leading to increased bounce rates. Search engines are quite intuitive and reward faster-loading sites with higher rankings. To achieve optimal speed, it’s common to use tools like Google’s PageSpeed Insights or GTmetrix. Activities such as compressing images, using content delivery networks (CDNs), optimizing JavaScript and CSS files, and leveraging browser caching are fundamental.

Mobile Optimization

The significance of Mobile Optimization has soared in recent years. As more users shift to accessing the web via mobile devices, a site’s mobile compatibility directly impacts its traffic and user satisfaction. Strategies like using responsive designs, ensuring that clickable elements are spread out, and opting for legible font sizes can greatly enhance a website’s mobile experience.

XML Sitemaps

Then we have XML Sitemaps, which essentially act as a website’s roadmap for search engines. They delineate the structure of your site, helping search engines comprehend and prioritize content. Regular updating of sitemaps, excluding non-essential pages, and submitting them to platforms like Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools can enhance site visibility.

Robots.txt

A Robots.txt file functions as a guide for search engines on which pages or segments of your site they should steer clear from. It’s a tool to ensure that search engines are not squandering their time on irrelevant pages.

Expanding the Horizons of Technical SEO

Structured Data and Schema Markup play a pivotal role in enhancing your listings on search engines, helping them understand the context of your content and possibly leading to rich snippets in search results. AMP (Accelerated Mobile Pages), on the other hand, focuses on speeding up page load times on mobile, improving user experience and potentially boosting rankings for mobile searches. 301 Redirects are essential when changing the URL of a page or merging two pages, ensuring that users and search engines are led to the correct page and that no SEO value is lost. Furthermore, Crawl Errors, which can be identified using tools like Google Search Console, need to be rectified promptly to ensure that search engines can access and index all vital pages efficiently.

Each of these elements, when optimized, contributes to the smooth accessibility and understanding of your website by search engines, thus influencing your site’s overall SEO performance.

Pillar two: On-Page SEO

On-page SEO deals with the content present on your website and how you can optimize it to rank better on search engines. This pillar ensures that search engines understand your content and its relevance to users.

Keyword Optimization

Keyword Optimization isn’t merely about embedding keywords into content. It’s about ensuring that search engines, and by extension, users, can understand the context and relevance of a page. Tools like Google Keyword Planner and SEMrush often come in handy, but the emphasis should be on natural integration, avoiding the pitfall of keyword stuffing.

Content Quality

One cannot overemphasize the importance of Content Quality. Engaging content not only captivates readers but also increases the time spent on a site and the likelihood of earning backlinks. Content should invariably be created with user intent in mind, ensuring it provides genuine value.

Meta Tags

Meta Tags are those behind-the-scenes snippets that tell search engines what your page is all about. Crafting compelling meta descriptions can significantly boost click-through rates, especially when they contain pertinent keywords.

URL Structure

When it comes to the URL Structure, simplicity and clarity reign supreme. Users and search engines alike prefer URLs that are concise and give a hint of the page’s content.

Internal Linking

Internal Linking might seem like a small detail, but it’s a potent tool in guiding visitors to other relevant pages on your site and helping search engines discover them. It’s all about creating a web of related content that enhances user experience.

Pillar three: Off-Page SEO

Off-page SEO revolves around activities outside your website that influence its ranking in search engine results pages (SERPs). The primary focus here is backlinks, which act as endorsements for your website.

Backlinks are akin to the endorsements of the digital world. The more quality, relevant backlinks a site has, the more authoritative it appears to search engines. However, the emphasis should always be on the quality rather than quantity.

Social Signals

In the realm of Social Signals, while the direct correlation with search rankings remains a subject of debate, the indirect benefits are undeniable. Positive engagements on platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram can drastically boost visibility and traffic.

Guest Blogging

Guest Blogging serves a dual purpose: it offers exposure to a new audience and often provides valuable backlinks. However, the focus should always be on writing quality content for reputable sites that resonate with your domain.

Brand Mentions

While they might not always be hyperlinked, Brand Mentions are pivotal. They can amplify a brand’s perceived authority, even if they don’t directly link back to the site. As an example, see our awards blog, where we share that we’ve won 2 awards this year (thus far). The organization behind the awards also links to hide-and-seek.com/, giving us the perfect example to emphasize the importance of branding.

Influencer Partnerships

Lastly, in the age of influencer culture, Influencer Partnerships can be immensely beneficial. A genuine collaboration can offer exposure, credibility, and sometimes, a fresh perspective.

Remember that SEO is ever-evolving, and staying updated with the latest guidelines and trends is crucial for long-term success.

Unleashing the Full Potential of YouTube Audiences

By Sabine, 4 August 2023

With YouTube as one of the best awareness channels in the digital landscape, advertisers have fantastic opportunities to reach their target audiences. To maximise the potential of YouTube, precise ad targeting is crucial.

In this comprehensive guide, we will explore various effective ways for advertisers to reach their audience on YouTube. From demographic targeting to contextual strategies, we will delve into all the targeting possibilities YouTube has to offer in order to make sure your message gets to the right audience, at the right time.

The Power of YouTube Ad Targeting

YouTube Ad targeting is all about customising ads for specific groups of viewers on the platform. By understanding how users interact with content, advertisers can personalise their messages to engage their ideal audience, which leads  to higher engagement.

Unlike traditional advertising, YouTube’s advanced targeting methods enable brands to connect with consumers genuinely interested in their products or services, making marketing efforts more effective.

Demographic Targeting: Reaching the Right Audience

With demographic targeting on YouTube, advertisers can focus on specific groups based on age, gender, location, parental status, household income, and language preferences. This approach allows businesses to tailor campaigns to their target audience.

For example, if you have a webshop that sells strollers, you can use the demographic targeting of YouTube to generate brand awareness by selecting the relevant parental status & age.

Interest-Based Targeting: Appealing to Viewer Passions

YouTube utilises user behaviour data on the platform to identify specific areas of interest. By analysing what videos users watch, which channels they subscribe to, and what topics they search for, advertisers can target viewers interested in their niche.

This targeting strategy not only increases engagement but also enhances the brand’s credibility, as ads appealing to the viewer’s passions improves the overall viewing experience, making users more receptive to ads that match their interests.

Contextual Targeting: Matching Ads with Relevant Content

Contextual targeting displays ads on YouTube that align with the specific videos users watch. The YouTube algorithm analyses video titles, descriptions, and tags to ensure that ads fit well with the brand’s message.

Advertisers find this valuable as it helps to protect their brand image and ensures their ads don’t appear next to inappropriate or irrelevant content. Contextual targeting provides a seamless ad experience, leading to increased engagement and a positive association with the brand.

So, for example: you are a festival in metal music and select the interest category ‘metalheads’ your ad can show on any video or channel that this user watches, since he falls in the category. However, with contextual targeting you can use multiple keywords around metal or metal bands, making sure your ad will only show on videos and channels related to these keywords.

Remarketing: Reconnecting with Interested Users

Remarketing, also known as retargeting, is a powerful strategy that allows advertisers to reconnect with users who previously showed interest in their brand. If people visit a brand’s website but leave without making a purchase, remarketing enables them to bring these users back to YouTube with targeted ads.

This clever approach increases brand awareness, reminds users of their previous interest, and encourages them to take the action they had previously postponed. Remarketing is a valuable tool for brands seeking to capture the attention of potential customers who have already shown interest in their offerings. You can remarket both website visitors and youtube viewers.

Placement Targeting: Controlling Ad Display

Placement Targeting gives advertisers the ability to determine where their ads appear on YouTube. They can select specific channels, videos, or categories where they want their ads to be shown, connecting their brand with relevant content and reaching their desired audiences. This level of control allows advertisers to associate their brand with content creators or genres that match their target audience’s preferences. By carefully choosing ad placement, advertisers increase the likelihood of engagement and strengthen their brand association with the viewers they want to reach.

YouTube Ad Targeting Best Practices: Crafting Effective Campaigns

To make the most of YouTube ad targeting, advertisers should follow these best practices:

  • Set Clear Objectives: Define specific goals for each ad campaign, such as increasing brand awareness, driving website traffic, or boosting product sales.
  • Know Your Audience: Thoroughly research and understand your target audience’s preferences, interests, and behaviours to tailor your messaging effectively.
  • Create Compelling Content: Develop high-quality, captivating, and relevant ad content that resonates with your target audience.
  • Optimise for Mobile & TV: Since a significant portion of YouTube traffic comes from mobile & TV devices, ensure your ads are mobile-friendly to reach a wider audience.
  • Monitor and Analyze Performance: Regularly track the performance of your ad campaigns and use analytics to refine your targeting and messaging strategies.

The Future of YouTube Ad Targeting: Embracing Innovation

As YouTube and digital advertising continue to evolve, the future of ad targeting will be characterised by more advanced AI algorithms, deeper user insights, and innovative ad formats.

By embracing new technologies and staying up-to-date with YouTube’s evolving features, advertisers can maintain a competitive edge and deliver more personalised, engaging, and effective ad experiences to their audiences.

Conclusion

In conclusion, mastering YouTube ad targeting is essential for advertisers looking to effectively reach their target audiences and achieve meaningful results. By using demographic, interest-based, contextual-, and placement targeting, brands can create engaging ad campaigns that resonate with viewers and inspire action.

How search engines work: updates and visibility

By Sabine, 1 August 2023

In the ever-evolving world of digital marketing, search engines play a pivotal role in determining the online success of businesses. As an agency offering Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) services, it is essential to grasp the inner workings of search engines and how they update their algorithms. In this article, we will explore the timing of search engine updates, their potential effects on your website, and what is currently known about these powerful digital gatekeepers.

Understanding search engines

A search engine is fully automated software that explores the web for billions and billions of pages. Let’s explore ourselves, how does a search engine work in 3 simple steps:

Step 1: crawling of websites

Out of all those billions of pages, most of them are discovered by crawlers rather than being manually submitted. This process is called crawling and is carried out by crawlers. These crawlers navigate the internet from link to link, from page to page, gathering valuable data to be stored in the search engine index (see Step 2). During crawling, the crawlers follow the paths of internal and external links on web pages. Whenever they encounter a new link, they jump to another page, and this process continues until they reach an endpoint or a predetermined number of pages. Crawling is a continuous process that enables search engines to constantly discover and update new content in their database.

Step 2: storing of website information (indexing)

After crawling vast quantities of websites, it’s time for the next crucial step: indexing. During crawling, the crawlers have gathered valuable data from various web pages, including text, images, videos, and other media content. This collected information is stored in a massive database, commonly known as the search engine’s index.

Step 3: serving the most relevant pages to a search query

Having completed the first two steps, it’s now time for the next and most essential step: serving the most relevant pages to the user who entered a search query. This step is the heart of the search process and aims to deliver the most valuable information to the user to meet their needs.

When a user enters a search query into a search engine, the search engine scans its vast index to find pages that are relevant to that specific search query. The goal is to present results that align with the user’s search intent. This means that the search engine not only looks at the exact keywords entered but also considers the context, meaning, and purpose behind the search query.

These steps together are known as an algorithm. In order to serve the best content for their users, search engines keep their algorithm up-to-date with – you guessed it – frequent updates. Overall, search engine updates are a vital aspect of the dynamic digital landscape, and understanding them is crucial for agencies offering SEO services and companies using SEO to ensure their (clients’) websites are optimized for improved visibility, organic traffic, and online success.

The dynamic nature of search engine updates

Search engines, such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo, continually update their algorithms to deliver the most relevant and high-quality search results to their users. These updates aim to improve user experience, combat spam, and adapt to changing trends and user behavior. However, search engine updates are not scheduled on specific dates, and their frequency and magnitude can vary. In other words, usually we don’t know when a search engine is updating their algorithm and we find out afterwards since there will be changes that are noticed.

Historically, major algorithm updates like Google’s Panda, Penguin, and Hummingbird have caused seismic shifts in search engine rankings. These updates were significant and had a substantial impact on website visibility. However, over time, search engines have transitioned towards more frequent and subtle updates that take place continuously, often referred to as “rolling updates.”

The impact on your website

When search engines update their algorithms, they can have both positive and negative effects on your website’s visibility. Let’s explore how these updates can influence your online presence:

Positive impact

Improved rankings: If your website adheres to the updated ranking factors, it can experience a boost in search engine rankings, resulting in increased visibility and organic traffic.

Enhanced user experience: Updates often prioritize websites that provide a seamless and user-friendly experience. Optimizing your website accordingly can lead to better engagement and higher conversions.

Negative impact

Decreased rankings: If your website’s content or structure no longer aligns with the updated algorithms, it may experience a drop in rankings, leading to decreased visibility and organic traffic.

Penalty risk: Certain updates target spammy or manipulative tactics. Engaging in unethical SEO practices, such as keyword stuffing or buying links, can trigger penalties and result in severe ranking declines or even website removal from search engine indexes.

What is known about search engine updates

While search engines are often tight-lipped about the specifics of their updates, the SEO community conducts extensive research and analysis to understand their impact. Here are some key insights that have been gleaned:

Content quality and relevance

High-quality content: Search engines prioritize websites that provide valuable, well-researched, and original content that meets users’ needs.

Relevance: The importance of relevancy cannot be overstated. Aligning your content with users’ search intent and optimizing it around relevant keywords improves your chances of ranking higher.

User experience and technical SEO

Page speed: Fast-loading websites have an advantage in search engine rankings as they provide a better user experience.

Mobile-friendliness: With the increasing use of mobile devices, search engines favor mobile-friendly websites that adapt to different screen sizes.

Structured data: Using structured data markup can enhance the appearance of your website in search results, providing more context to search engines.

High-quality backlinks: Earning backlinks from reputable and relevant websites is a strong signal of your website’s authority and can positively impact your rankings.

Link quality over quantity: Search engines now prioritize the quality of backlinks rather than the sheer number. Focus on building organic and natural links.

Social signals and engagement

Social media presence: While the direct impact of social signals on rankings is debated, a strong social media presence can increase brand visibility, drive traffic, and indirectly influence SEO.

Integral part of the digital landscape

Search engine updates are an integral part of the ever-evolving digital landscape, shaping the visibility and success of websites. Understanding these updates and their potential impact is vital for agencies offering SEO services. By staying informed about the latest trends and best practices, you can ensure your clients’ websites are optimized to meet the evolving demands of search engines, improving their visibility, organic traffic, and ultimately, their online success.

How SEO works: an introduction

By Sabine, 28 July 2023

In our previous blog we explained how search engines work, now that you have this understanding we can go a step further. If you’ve ever heard of SEO, you probably know that it’s important for your online visibility. But what exactly is SEO and how does it work?

What is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It is a collection of strategies and techniques used to improve a website’s visibility in the organic (non-paid) search results of search engines. The ultimate goal of SEO is to attract more organic traffic to a website and increase its position in the search results.

Why is SEO important?

SEO is important because it makes your website more visible in search engines such as Google. People search for information, products and services through search engines every day, and if your website appears high in the search results, you increase the chances that users will visit your website. This can lead to more traffic, more leads and ultimately more sales. In addition, SEO contributes to an improved user experience and reliability of your website.

How does SEO work?

SEO works based on a combination of factors that search engines use to rate and rank websites. Although search engines use complex algorithms, there are four main pillars that form the basis of SEO:

  • Technical SEO
  • Content
  • User Experience (UX)
  • Authority (link building)

1. Technical SEO

By technical SEO, we mean everything you adjust on the backend of your website. This is often not visible to the user. With technical SEO, we provide, among other things:

  • A clear website structure
  • Fast loading time
  • Mobile responsiveness
  • Correct use of structured data
  • As few error pages as possible
  • Use of sitemaps

Search engines want to give users the best experience, and a well-structured, fast and mobile-friendly website is an important factor contributing to higher rankings. By focusing on technical optimization, you help search engines better understand and index your website. It also contributes to a better user experience.

2. Content

Content is king, and creating valuable, relevant and informative content is essential to attract both users and search engines. Good content not only attracts more users, but also increases conversions. By conducting keyword research and strategically integrating it into your content, you increase the chances that your pages will be shown to users looking for information you provide. Here, it is important to use keywords in a natural and non-spammy way so that your content remains valuable to your target audience.

3. User Experience (UX)

User Experience (UX) is becoming increasingly important to SEO. This is due to Google’s focus on E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness). Search engines take into account how users behave on your website, such as the time they spend on pages, the number of pages they visit and the bounce rate (the percentage of people who view only one page and then leave the website).

A good UX means that your website is easy to navigate and understand, with a clear call-to-action. By providing visitors with a positive experience, you increase the chances that they will stay on your website longer and return, which in turn positively affects your positions in the search results.

Authority, also known as link building, is about how reliable your website is. Search engines consider backlinks – links from other websites to yours – as a sign of reliability and authority. The more quality and relevant websites link to your website, the more likely search engines will consider your content valuable and rank it higher in the search results. However, link building requires a careful strategy, as obtaining unnatural or spammy links can, in turn, be harmful to your positions in the search results.

SEO activities

Applying SEO consists of several activities that must be performed consistently. These include:

  • Conducting keyword research
  • On-page optimization
  • Creating valuable content
  • Optimizing technical aspects of the website
  • Actively working on link building

Conducting keyword research

One of the first and most crucial steps in SEO is keyword research. This involves identifying relevant keywords and phrases that people use when searching for products, services or information you offer. By researching keywords extensively, you can gain insight into user intent and determine which search terms can drive the most traffic and potential customers to your website.

On-page optimization

Next, on-page optimization is an important aspect. You adjust various elements on your website to help search engines understand what your pages are about. By this we mean optimizing page titles, meta descriptions, URL structures and using relevant keywords in the content. On-page optimization helps search engines better understand the context of your pages and increases the chances that your website will appear when people are looking for related information.

Creating valuable content

Creating high-quality, relevant and valuable content is also essential. Search engines value content that provides answers to users’ questions and needs. By regularly publishing new and informative content, you increase your chances of ranking higher in the search results and build authority within your industry.

Optimize technical aspects of the website

Besides content optimization, technical SEO is another important aspect that should not be forgotten. This is about improving the technical aspects of your website to increase its performance and visibility. This includes: optimizing the loading speed of your website, using structured data to help search engines understand your content, and ensuring a mobile-friendly experience.

Link building is another crucial part of SEO. Obtaining quality backlinks from other relevant and authoritative websites is a sign of credibility and reliability to search engines.

SEO is an ongoing process that requires constant optimization and adjustments to improve results and stay ahead of the competition.

Why should you invest in SEO?

By investing in SEO, you are investing in the growth and success of your online visibility. It is a long-term strategy that delivers sustainable results. Although it takes time and effort to achieve good positions in search results, SEO offers the opportunity to generate long-term organic traffic to your website without relying on paid advertising. By investing in SEO, you are investing in the growth and success of your online presence.
