Inside the Future of Festivals: Learnings from Berlin

Last week, I took a trip to Berlin. My destination: Future of Festivals. It is a conference and trade fair for the live events industry. Festival organisers, suppliers, creatives, and experts come together to explore what lies ahead.

Being in the heart of the industry was a great reminder of why we do what we do. And why we’ll be back next year. Curious how online advertising can grow your festival? Feel free to reach out!

The Future of Festival is a space full of innovation in production, sustainability, marketing, and technology. And just as importantly, a place to connect, network, and meet both new and familiar faces. A hub where ideas for the festivals of tomorrow are shaped not only on stage, but in conversations across the entire venue.

    Exploring the Future of Festivals

For us, as an online marketing agency deeply rooted in the festival world, it’s essential to stay close to the industry we love. Many of our clients operate in live events. Staying ahead of developments helps us bring forward-thinking ideas to the table, ensuring the right messaging reaches the right people. This approach ultimately elevates the festival experience and supports our partners in selling out. So off we went… exploring the future of festivals.

There were many insightful sessions and panels, far more than I can list here. I joined everything from discussions on international promotion to talks on generational expectations and festival tourism. Other sessions covered sustainability, safety, and shifting audience behaviours. Some sessions were in German as well, which meant I really had to sharpen my ears to catch the essence. It made the experience even more fun and immersive.

On the fair floor, countless booths showcased fun and forward-thinking innovations. There was also a designated area for Dutch impact makers, filled with ideas that genuinely have the potential to make a difference. Along the way, I kept running into familiar faces. From ticketing partners and payment systems to ridesharing platforms, living labs, and of course many different festivals. Even though I travelled alone, I instantly felt welcomed and quickly became part of a fun bigger group. A big thank you to everyone who made that happen.

Adapting to Expectations of Festival Audiences

Reflecting on my main takeaways, a broader theme stood out: festivals must remain deeply attuned to the shifting wishes and expectations of their audiences. Beyond strong, trend-driven line-ups, visitors increasingly look for additional programming, comfort, atmosphere, and curated experiences. In one of the sessions, a professor introduced the five E’s a festival should keep in mind: Esthetics, Education, Entertainment, Escapism, and Economic Value. A simple but powerful reminder that a festival is way more than just a line-up.

Zooming in on marketing, our core domain, several topics resurfaced across sessions.

    • The channel mix is expanding, with festivals relying heavily on Meta and TikTok, both organically and paid.
    • Video-first was clearly the standard across nearly all case examples. With that shift, long-form content is also making a comeback, and the aftermovie is rising in importance again.
    • Content must be diverse, showing a complete and inclusive picture of the crowd and all the experiences on offer.
    • Tailored messaging for different audience segments is becoming non-negotiable.
    • Reaching younger audiences remains a challenge. Creators and micro-influencers were mentioned as one of the tools festivals experiment with. But clearly, they’re just part of a much bigger strategic picture.

It was clear that a strong marketing strategy is essential. Focused, creative, and perfectly aligned with the festival and its’ audiences. That’s what drives success.

    Online Marketing for Live Events

So, here and there, online marketing was mentioned. Those moments caught my attention right away, since this is what we work on every day. We continuously see shifts that could strongly impact festival success. From creating the right content for each platform to using audience insights and proper measurement to optimise every step. We know firsthand how much the right online advertising strategy can influence the success of a festival.

Looking ahead, we truly see online advertising as part of the future of festivals. It helps reach the right audiences, build excitement, and sell more tickets. We would love to help shape the conversation next year; by showing how online advertising can strengthen festival growth. Hopefully, someone from our team can take the stage and bring this topic the attention it deserves.

    See you!

Overall, Future of Festivals was inspiring, energising, and absolutely worth the trip. Being surrounded by the industry we care so much about reminded me once again why we do what we do, and why we can’t wait to return next year.
